Why should you go back to school?

Why should you go back to school, either in person or online?  How many people really enjoyed school, especially dissecting a frog in biology class?

The answer is the job market continues to evolve and there is an significant competition for stable, well-paying jobs.  This competition will become more intense during our lifetime.  As a result, people are looking to education to move themselves up the corporate ladder.  They do this by gaining more education in their current professions or helping themselves to make a career change.

Once you decided that you want to go back to school, one of the biggest challenges that people have is finding the time to do it.  If you attend classes while working, you end up sacrificing time with your family and if you leave your job to attend classes, you could lose career momentum as well as your income.

As a result, people are looking more and more to taking classes online.  With online education, you have the flexibility of taking the classes so that you can manage your schedule better in light of your professional and social commitments.

The key questions are what course do you want to take and where should you take them from.  I will be delving into these questions over the next few days.

Congratulations to me!  I received my first feedback from a reader.  She said:

“The question people need to ask themselves is --- is there something preventing you from advancement?  People should invest in exploring their personality power, seeking self discovery and asking themselves honest questions about what they can excel at. Now doing this can help them harness what drives them and potentially exceeds the value of any degree.”

I am grateful for her advice.  I will, however, continue recommending learning as the primary option for advancement but I do think that it is a good idea to sharpen your focus, possibly through courses of self discovery.  My reviewer first recommended Eckhart Tolle then Wayne Dyer.

For those of who do know who they are, here is a brief bio from their websites:

“Eckhart Tolle is emerging as one of the most original and inspiring spiritual teachers of our time. He travels and teaches throughout the world.  Eckhart is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition, but excludes none. His profound yet simple and practical teachings have helped thousands of people find inner peace and greater fulfillment in their lives. At the core of his teachings lies the transformation of individual and collective human consciousness - a global spiritual awakening.  Eckhart Tolle is the author of The Power of Now, a #1 New York Times best-seller which has been widely recognized as one of the most influential spiritual books of our time. It has been translated into over 30 languages.”

“Wayne W. Dyer, Ph.D., is an internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development. He’s the author of 29 books, has created many audio programs and videos, and has appeared on thousands of television and radio shows. His books Manifest Your Destiny, Wisdom of the Ages, There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, and The New York Times bestsellers 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace, The Power of Intention, and Inspiration have all been featured as National Public Television specials.  Dr. Wayne Dyer is affectionately called the "father of motivation" by his fans. Despite his childhood spent in orphanages and foster homes, Dr. Dyer has overcome many obstacles to make his dreams come true. Today he spends much of his time showing others how to do the same.”

Please let me know your thoughts on the benefits of their teachings.

Great article. I agree that going back to school makes sense. Do you have any references that one can check out to review various continuing education programs?

      Jessica,

Thanks for the feedback.  My recommendations on which programs are best for you would depend on what type of degree you are looking for and what is your intended field of study.

That being said, I would recommend that you start by looking at the following four web sites.  Each of them have an extensive list of courses and fields of study.

      ClassesUSA -- http://classesusa.com/
      Kaplan University -- http://getinfo.kaplan.edu/Microsite_B/areasOfStudy.aspx
      University of Phoenix -- http://universityofphoenix.com/
      Earn My Degree -- http://www.earnmydegree.com/

Please let me know about your experience with these sites.

Great article - I think that going back to school is good but using your other attributes can achieve more than brains from time to time.

      Stephen,

Unfortunately, there are some people who value physical attributes higher than intelligence.  But those people and their companies tend not to be the best performers and the companies that you do not want to work for.  As a result, I strongly recommend that you avoid people and companies that have this attitude.

    Hello David,

I thought the article was great. I think online education is much easier n more convenient for some of us. Trying to work and taking care of the kids at the same time is hard enough. The commuting back and forth to school will really kill me.
