The Big Tuna Fish Question

I was eating lunch today with a friend.  We each had a tuna melt and as we discussed how good it tasted, we were wondering how many cans of tuna fish does a tuna make.  If this was the time before the internet, we would have to go the research section of the nearest library or go fishing for a tuna and see how many cans we can make.

Since there are very few canneries still left on the east coast of the US, this is probably not the best way of figuring this out.  I bet my friend that the answer would be only a few clicks away in the world of the internet.  First stop was Google but that was no help.  Google provided me a whole bunch of stories on the level of mercury contained in albacore tuna. So now I was frustrated and unhappy with my health.

We found out that an average albacore tuna weighs 20 pounds and an average tuna fish can weighs 6 ounces.  Not the answer but it is a start.

We started a pool on the answer.  We have submissions that range from 10 to 100 cans.

I guess it might be about 30 cans. Of course there are different kinds of tuna. There are small tunas and big tunas. That's why there are no exact answer to your question... But I suppose it's about 30 in average.
