My Travels and Travails -- Russian Visa

I have a trip scheduled to St Petersburg next week.  I totally underestimated the challenge to plan and execute this trip.  After dealing with the traditional headaches of booking flights and hotels, I had to address obtaining a visa from the Russian Consulate.  They do have a helpful website (www.russianembassy.org) which provide me a description of the various forms of visas as well as the applications themselves.  To start, I am traveling for business but I am getting a tourist visa.  I then had to expedite the application since I was trying to get the visa less than a month in advance.  Some interesting requests on the form include:  a cover letter, my insurance information, my prior employment history and an invitation to stay at a hotel.

I filled out the application as best as I could, which turned out not to be that good.  So off I went to the Russian Consulate to apply for the visa.  After spending a good hour and change waiting, I spoke with a nice official who pointed out that I had a hotel confirmation when I need a hotel invitation.  He recommended that I obtain the necessary paperwork from one of their recommended suppliers.  So off I went to the Russian Travel Agency who were as nice as could be.  They took all of the forms that I worked so hard on and effectively threw them out and created the ones that I needed.  They did their black magic and sure enough three days later I received my visa.  I wished I knew this place existed beforehand.  This would have saved many hours and much pain.
